Tech giants give millions to coronavirus assistance fund for low-income residents

Cisco Systems Inc. on Monday said it committed $225 million in products and cash to the local and global coronavirus response, including $2 million toward a $9 million fund for Santa Clara County residents who have lost income as a result of the pandemic.
The Santa Clara County Homelessness Prevention System's emergency assistance program is intended to provide help with rent payments or other basic needs to county residents who make less than 80 percent of the area median income — $72,750 for a single person or $103,900 for a family of four.
The fund is a public-private partnership and has also received commitments of $1.5 million from Western Digital Corp., $1 million each from Adobe Inc. and Destination: Home, $500,000 each from Zoom Video Communications and Broadcom, $300,000 from Micron, $150,000 from Facebook and $100,000 each from Infosys, Silver Lake and Hewlett Packard Enterprise.
“I’ve been really impressed with all of our peer companies in the Valley who have stepped up and have really contributed to actually try to solve these problems,” Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins said in a live-streamed news conference on Monday. “No matter how inconvenient this crisis may feel to any of us, it’s the people who are most vulnerable that actually are struggling the most.”
Facebook’s $150,000 contribution is part of the Menlo Park social media giant’s $500,000 donation for emergency homelessness prevention for Bay Area residents. The company has also donated 720,000 masks and almost 1.5 million gloves to healthcare workers this month.
San Jose City Council and the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors are each set to consider adding an additional $2 million to the program on Tuesday. Eligible residents must demonstrate that they have lost income as a result of the virus in order to apply for direct financial assistance of up to $4,000 per month.
In addition to Cisco’s participation in the financial assistance program, Cisco is donating $210 million worth of technology products to support global needs around healthcare, education, government response and critical technology as the virus infects thousands and disrupts economies.

Part of that product donation is set to go to the United Nations Foundation’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund, supporting the World Health Organization’s effort to manage the spread of the virus.
Cisco is also donating $8 million in cash to the global virus response through the Country Digital Acceleration program, which will allow Cisco to provide funding for heads of state, government agencies and businesses to deploy technology related to the virus.
